概要：Proliferation is tightly regulated in normal cells so that it is balanced with differentiation in adults. Mutations in different genes can result in cells undergoing uncontrolled growth so that ultimately tumours are formed. The Cancer Biology MSc will give a thorough training in this subject area with opportunities to undertake research placements in the labs of leading researchers working on various processes relating to tumourigenesis. The major areas of research are as follows: 1) Understanding cell cycle control mechanisms and how they are disrupted in the formation of a tumour. 2) Investigating the cell fate choices of normal cells, and how these differ in cancer cells. 3) Investigating how cell signals regulate gene expression in different types of cells, and how this flow of information is compromised in cancer cells. Research in these areas in the Faculty of Life Sciences exploits a wide range of different types of models, and makes use of state-of-the-art techniques. In the longer term it is anticipated that understanding these basic processes will allow novel therapeutic strategies to be developed.
