概要：The city within which Birkbeck is situated is, for many, the cultural as well as the political and economic heart of the country in which they now live. London?fs history is characterised equally by depth and diversity, drawing on some 2,000 years of historical development, during which it has been the centre of political change and social transformation. It is an important subject for study in itself, and has been the focus of Birkbeck?fs innovative MA in London Studies for twenty years. But cities in general have been dynamic centres of activity and transformation for the whole of human history, and in the twenty-first century the majority of the world?fs population will live in great metropolises or conurbations. Understanding cities and the pressures that shape them and the lives of their inhabitants is essential to a broader understanding of societies past and present. A new MA in Cities and Culture, incorporating a strand or pathway on London Studies, draws on the range of expertise in the School of History, Classics & Archaeology and offers students a range of approaches to urban history together with specialist city studies from the medieval period to the contemporary.
