概要：This MA in English explores some of the complex literary, cultural and intellectual transformations that took place within British culture during the 'long nineteenth century' - from 1790 until 1914. While its focus is on literature, the various courses are all interdisciplinary or comparative, placing texts and cultural movements within a range of specific contexts. There is a strong focus on the interconnections between literary and visual culture - these are explored in the options 'The Visual Culture of Romanticism' and 'Image and Text'. Courses also explore various aspects of nineteenth century cultural discourse - including developments in science and evolutionary theory, psychology and sexology, religion and anthropology - and investigate how literary texts are engaged in continual interaction with the intellectual frameworks and social and cultural contexts in which they are produced. Drawing on a range of theoratical perspectives, these topics are explored in the courses 'Culture and Intellect in the Nineteenth Century', 'The Victorian Unconscious', 'Romantic and Nineteenth-Century Sexualities' and 'The Fin de Siecle'.
