概要：The vast majority of wars in the world today involve ethnic conflict within states. At the same time, globalisation, the end of ideology and international norms of self-determination have spawned a growing self-consciousness among ethnic groups and nations. In the West, majority groups bemoan a loss of national identity, while minority nations press for devolution or independence. In the developing world, fragmentation reigns: democratisation has given rise to ethnic parties while the end of the Cold War has weakened the post-colonial state. Religious ideologies like pan-Islamism draw on many of the same sources of grievance as nationalism, but also challenge nationalism in important ways.
