概要：This is a one year course for graduate students involving study and training in research in Chinese Studies or who have taken Chinese as a major subject in a first degree programme. Applicants should have a good reading knowledge of Chinese. For those whose interests are in pre-modern, medieval or early China, at least two years of experience of the classical language is essential. Some knowledge of Japanese before coming to Cambridge is also desirable if an applicant's field of interest is in certain areas. Applicants whose native language is not English will be required by the Board of Graduate Studies to give evidence of proficiency in English. The course has two main components. There is a dissertation written in English, with a limit of 15,000 words, on a topic submitted for approval by the Degree Committee half way through the course. There is also a schedule of four papers, from which candidates have to choose three. The topic of the dissertation must fall within the field of interest of one of the Teaching Officers in Chinese who are responsible for the course. The ideas that an applicant had for his or her dissertation topic are an important aspect of his or her application. Guidance on the preparation of the dissertation is provided by a candidate's Supervisor, who is appointed by the Degree Committee soon after the start of course. The dissertations are submitted not later than 31 August following the start of the course.
