概要：The purpose of this programme lies in enhancing the awareness and expertise of students in a subject that has increasingly come to the centre of university courses in history over the past decade. A knowledge of historiography within which a research topic may be situated is now regarded by funding agencies as important within the 'training' aspects of a Master's degree for those intending to proceed to a doctoral programme. And for those who are not, the subject affords a wonderful change of direction for students who feel jaded by conventional approaches to the subject. In this course we shall investigate the intellectual framework within which history has come to be written and ask questions about why it has taken the form it has. We achieve this objective by considering simultaneously the history of historcal writing and some urgent issues in curent historical theory, so that one avenue may intersect with the other. It is this vision of what a study of historiography involves that makes the course distinctive in the UK and ensures the coherence of what is offered.
